Film: Hello I Am David!
Born to Polish Jewish parents who emigrated to Australia in the 1930s, David Helfgott was a child prodigy who came to London to study piano at the Royal College of Music. His life was immortalised in the Oscar-winning movie Shine. After a mental breakdown his promising career seemed over, but through the healing power of music and his love for his wife Gillian, he fought his way back to the concert stage. At 71 he is still performing today. In this first-ever documentary film about him, we get close to David’s infectious passion, personality and impulsiveness. He plays what he feels, he says what he thinks, and touches people’s emotions. This is a film about music and love, about seeing life differently, about living positively for today. It is being screened for first time in the UK at POSK, ahead of David Helfgott’s concert on 13 October at Cadogan Hall, Sloane Square. We are grateful to Magnet Film, Berlin for making the film available.
