Janina Baranowska
Born in Grodno, she remained there until the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1940 she was arrested and deported to Russia. Two years later she was released joining the Polish Army in its march to the Middle East. In 1946 she moved to London where she studied under professor David Bomberg at the Borough Polytechnic in 1947-50. She continued studies at the Polish University in London in 1951-54. The next five years she spent at the Putney School of Arts studying graphic techniques and ceramics. For a number of years she was on the Board of the National Society of Painters and Sculptors, and Association of International Arts. In 1980 she became President of the Polish Artists Society in Great Britain, later the Association of Polish Artists in Great Britain and she was a member of the Catholic and Christian Artists group. She practises painting and graphic art, and designs stained glass windows. She exhibited in leading galleries in the UK, France, Poland and the United States. She has been awarded several prizes for painting and stained glass windows. The latter can be seen in St A.Bobola’s Church in London and in Holy Trinity Church in Wolverhampton. Her works are in private collections in London, Paris, Monaco, Bruxelles and the United States, as well as in the National Museum in Warsaw, the Museum of Art in Lodz and the Émigré Museum in Torun. She is featured in Who’s Who in Art, Who’s Who in Europe, Contemporary Polish Artists in Great Britain, Art in Exile and other publications. For the last twenty years she has been working as a Director of the Gallery in the Polish Social and Cultural Centre (POSK) in Hammersmith, in London organising exhibitions and helping artists from Poland and other countries.

Urodzona w Grodnie, tam spędziła dzieciństwo do wybuchu II wojny światowej. Aresztowana w 1940r. została wywieziona do Rosji. Po dwu latach została zwolniona i wstąpiła do Armii Polskiej, z którą wyjechała na Bliski Wschód. W roku 1946 zamieszkała w Londynie, gdzie studiowała malarstwo w Borough Polytechnic w latach 1947-50 pod kierunkiem prof. Davida Bomberga. Studia kontynuowała na Uniwersytecie Polskim w Londynie w latach 1951-54. Przez nastepne pięć lat studiowała techniki graficzne i ceramikę w Putney School of Arts. Przez wiele lat była członkiem zarządu National Society of Painters and Sculptors i Association of International Arts. Od roku 1980 była Prezesem Zrzeszenia Plastyków Polskich w Wielkiej Brytanii, później Association of Polish Artists in Great Britain oraz członkiem grupy Catholic and Christian Artists. Uprawia malarstwo, grafikę i projektuje witraże. Wystawiała w znanych galeriach w Wielkiej Brytanii, Francji, Polsce i Stanach Zjednoczonych. Była wielokrotnie nagradzana za malarstwo i witraże. Jej witraże można zobaczyć m.in. w kościele Św. Andrzeja Boboli i kościele Przenajswiętszej Trójcy w Wolverhampton. Jej prace są w kolekcjach prywatnych w Londynie, Paryżu, Monako, Brukseli i Stanach Zjednoczonych, a także w Muzeum Narodowym w Warszawie, Muzeum Sztuki w Łodzi i Muzeum Emigracji w Toruniu. Artystka jest odnotowana w Who’s Who in Art, Who’s Who in Europe, Contemporary Polish Artists in Great Britain, Art in Exile i innych publikacjach.

Od ponad dwudziestu lat Janina Baranowska jest dyrektorem Galerii POSK (Polski Ośrodek Społeczno-Kulturalny) na Hammersmith w Londynie i organizuje wystawy pomagając artystom z Polski i innych krajów.

The POSK Gallery is open daily from 10:00 to 21:00.

The POSK reception passes on information left for the Gallery and also any details of sales from exhibitions in the Gallery.

Exhibitions change every two weeks.

Terms of Hire

The gallery may be hired for two-week periods on payment of a deposit at the time of fixing the dates, the balance is due two months before the date of the exhibition. Please contact us for more information regarding hiring and acceptance of works for display.

We accept proposals for exhibitions of paintings, drawings, graphic art, sculpture, ceramics, photographs, and any works of art by artists living in Poland or abroad.

Confirmation of acceptance of any works is given after receiving a minimum of 4-6 colour photographs of the proposed works via the internet.
