By any normal account there ought to be some traces of eclecticism in Magda Kozarzewska's paintings in the light of her background; but there is not, and one can only suppose she is among that fortunate few who are born artists, and select whatever they most need for their development from wherever they find themselves.

By any normal account there ought to be some traces of eclecticism in Magda Kozarzewska's paintings in the light of her background; but there is not, and one can only suppose she is among that fortunate few who are born artists, and select whatever they most need for their development from wherever they find themselves.

Magda Kozarzewska was born and educated in Poland, Warsaw. Coming to London to learn English while hopeful for a place to study at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Art, she was accepted as a student first at Chelsea School of Art and then at the Slade School of Fine Art. She was fortunate to be taught by Coldstream, Gowing and Uglow. Lucian Freud was a regular visitor too. She has remained in England, painting pictures which are French in feeling rather then Polish or English - not copying Cezanne or Matisse, but working in the French masters' spirit of liveliness and adventure. The rigorous practice of objective painting which was part of her training at the Slade, clearly much valued, and which showed strongly in her earlier work, has become transmuted into a personal poetry, perceptive, clear and individual.

The paintings in this exhibition include landscapes, portraits, still lifes and enteriors, painted in blocks and passages of bold and often contrasting colours. They give a very personal and private insight into a life essentially dedicated to painting, in which the familiar surroundings of everyday life become part of the quiet intriguing theatre of these canvases.

Magda Kozarzewska took part in many solo and group exhibitions including : Hayward Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Royal Academy or Art, Zacheta Gallery, Morley Gallery, Sue Rankin Gallery, Thackery Gallery, Duncan Campbell Gallery and Kings Place Gallery.

For many years she taught objective painting and drawing at many art schools and colleges including : Royal College of Art, Heatherleys School of Fine Art Chelsea School of Art and Kingston University.

Her work is in many collections in the UK, Europe, USA, South Africa, Canada and Bermuda.
